The Jayne Frost series by Kristen Painter

Last year after reading one serious crime book after the other (I know I shouldn’t complain because I LOVE the genre) I fell into a bit of a reading slump. I started about half a dozen books and I didn’t make it past the first couple of chapters…

It wasn’t the books, it was me.

I needed a break. I needed a change.

So, after browsing the kindle store, which is a total guilty pleasure of mine, I happened to chance upon the Jayne Frost series. For whatever crazy reason or another I had completely overlooked the amazing and entertaining words of Kristen Painter.

Big mistake.

And one I am still rectifying, one book at a time.

The first in the series Miss Frost solves a cold case – a Nocturne Falls mystery is a lot of fun, and for me it was exactly what I needed. It was a quick read with a feisty female lead, in this case Santa’s niece. At the start I did think I was getting a Christmassy story but apart from sneaking in and out places like her Uncle 😊 it’s more a mystery whodunnit with some helpful local hunks thrown in for good measure. To be totally cheesy about it, I felt like it was the refreshing blast of icy air that I needed in my reading life.

To date I have also read the second in the series - Miss Frost ices the imp, which follows a similar mystery whodunnit but this time with just a little more mayhem running amuck.

For me the strength of this series lies in the characters – I love Jayne and her motely band of helpers.  And the setting of Nocturne Falls, where supernatural beings can live among humans thanks to a certain spell in the town’s water supply, which makes the regular people less likely to notice any odd behaviour. Altogether the characters and setting make for some fun possibilities.

The only small complaint I have is that I could take or leave the love triangle. Preferably leave. Hopefully as the books move on Jayne will get around to making some decisions or opt out altogether and go in one route. Maybe a certain summer elf route. Personally, I think love triangles are boring. But that’s maybe just me.

Miss Frost solves a cold case and Miss Frost ices the Imp are totally the equivalent to some delicious junk food.

Junk reading?

Hmmm, that doesn’t have quite the right ring to it. But you get what I mean? The series so far has been entertaining, fun and something a bit different.

I will be reading book 3 as soon as the mood takes me.

Book blurb - Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year.

Jayne Frost is a lot of things. Winter elf, Jack Frost’s daughter, Santa Claus’s niece, heir to the Winter Throne and now…private investigator. Sort of.

Needing someone he can trust, her father sends her undercover to Nocturne Falls to find out why employees at the Santa’s Workshop toy store are going missing.

Doing that requires getting to know the town, which leads to interesting encounters with a sexy vampire, an old flame, and an elevator that’s strictly off-limits. The more Jayne finds out, the more questions she has, but the answers lead her deeper into danger.

Will her magic save her? Or will she come up cold?

I purchased Miss Frost solves a cold case and Miss Frost ices the Imp.

-------

Well apart from telling you that it was a good read, and it was. I want to say lots and lots about the story but at the same time I want to say absolutely nothing.

Nothing. Mouth – zipped. Nothing.

For fear that I will give away any of the many potential spoilers. Her last move was filled with twists and turns, especially in the latter portion of the book. I was hooked. I stayed up hours past my usual bedtime, despite an early morning because I needed to know what was going to happen. And the ending didn’t disappoint.

Personally, I always think that calling a book entertaining is high praise, because that is exactly what I want to be most of the time when I read. And with Her last move I was entertained from the beginning to the end – not a dull moment, not a boring chapter or character. In fact, I got quite attached to the characters and had to close the book for a moment, well, when…. spoiler!

Her last move by John Marrs gets 4.5**** stars out of 5 from me. Recommended.

This wasn’t my first John Marrs book, but it was my favourite so far…I am looking forward to picking up the next one. I have read great reviews about – The one.

I loaned/subscribed (?) Her last move by John Marrs via my kindle unlimited subscription.

Why a big hello to the blogging world!

I blogged years ago, mainly about books. I enjoyed it and found it tough going at times, but it was part of a journey I needed to do during a very tough time in my life.

My name is Jules and I have battled with infertility.

Not being able to have a family nearly broke me in a way that I could never have properly comprehended before the experience. It wasn’t a physical pain but so much of me hurt. Everyday. Every. Moment. Of. Everyday.

But then my very own wee miracle arrived after 3 years of trying to conceive that patched up my heart. She’s 5+ now. Wow time really does fly.

Anyway, enough with the heavy emotional baggage.

I gave up blogging, and I really gave up writing almost altogether, so my life could be all about my family. My baby. My husband. My dog. Who are all my big, enormous loves.

Now I want to get stuck back into writing and blogging – mostly about books because reading is one of my absolute pleasures and I enjoy sharing a good read as well as finding that fantastic recommendation.

In the past I haven’t been one for setting new year’s resolutions, but this year I want to make a small effort in that department.

So, my goals for 2019 are as follows –

1)Be happy and enjoy my family and friends and wee small (often smelly) poodle.

2)Write more. Write every day that I can. Write anything but WRITE.

3)Read – but who am I kidding that doesn’t really need to be a goal as I’ve already finished 3 books 13 days into 2019.

4)Be happy. It’s a biggie so it should go first and last.

I look forward to finding loads of new people and blogs! I’m sure 2019 is going to be a good year.
